Vanessa Maltese
Two-fold Tally

October 4–28, 2012

ESP is pleased to present Vanessa Maltese’s second solo exhibition, Two-fold Tally. Her new sculptures and paintings engage with formal elements, by acknowledging and toying with the boundaries of the frame and the architecture of the gallery. One sculpture suggests a tool, another sculpture suggests a coat rack, a painting suggests the skeleton of the panel itself. Motifs re-occur and are mirrored in the 2nd and 3rd dimension. The sculptures seem to be extracted from the paintings and likewise, hung on the wall, sticks subtly cutting through space. Through optical illusions and tonal play, the painting surfaces visually vibrate, while sculptures embody kinetic parts suggesting opportunity for movement.
